Blackfin Searobin

About this species

A striking bottom fish with huge, wing-like blue-edged pectoral fins and finger-like feelers it uses to walk and taste the seabed. It roams sandy Korean coastal bottoms probing for crustaceans and small fish. Baited bottom rigs dragged slowly over sand pick them up.

Bottom rigs with sandworm, small crab or shrimp dragged slowly over sandy bottoms; they often take baits intended for flounder and flatfish.

Edibility & Taste

Excellent; the sweet, firm white flesh makes outstanding clear soups, steamed dishes and sashimi; a prized catch in Japanese cuisine.

Similar Species

Oriental helmet gurnard (Dactyloptena orientalis) is sometimes confused but has even larger plate-like pectoral fins that resemble wings; typical searobin pectoral fins are large but not quite so plate-like.
