Crucian Carp

About this species

A hardy, deep-bodied cyprinid found throughout Korean ponds, reservoirs and slow rivers, the classic target of traditional float anglers. It roots along muddy bottoms for plants, seeds and invertebrates. Long float rods with dough or worm bait and groundbait define Korean freshwater fishing.

Bait & Rig

Dough bait (tteokbap) or earthworms fished just off the bottom under a sensitive float with groundbait; scented bread paste and rice bran are also widely used.

Edibility & Taste

Edible but often muddy in flavor unless from very clean water; primarily a sport fish in modern Korea, celebrated for the delicate craft of float angling.

Similar Species

Common carp (잉어) is much larger with prominent barbels at the mouth corners; crucian carp has no barbels and a fuller, rounder body profile.
