Seriola quinqueradiata
A powerful migratory jack, known as bang-eo, that is a prized winter food and sport fish in Korea and Japan. It travels in fast schools chasing baitfish and grows rapidly to large size. Jigging, live-bait fishing and trolling around reefs and current lines account for big fish.
10 – 100 m
Metal slow-pitch jigs and vertical jigs worked over reefs and current seams, or trolled lures near the surface when schools are active.
Outstanding winter delicacy; the rich, fatty flesh is celebrated for sashimi (especially winter buri), sushi and teriyaki.
Hiramasa (Seriola lalandi) is similar but slimmer with a yellow lateral stripe; buri has a more yellow tail and fuller body at maximum size.
