Japanese Jack Mackerel

About this species

A silver, scute-lined jack that schools densely around Korean harbors and reefs, a favorite of shore anglers. It gathers under lights at night to feed on plankton and small fish. Light sabiki rigs and tiny jigs, called ajing, provide fast, fun action.

Bait & Rig

Light sabiki rigs, 1–2 g jig heads with small soft plastics (ajing), or float rigs with small pieces of shrimp or krill.

Edibility & Taste

Delicious; sweet, mild flesh excellent as sashimi, seared tataki, fried or lightly salted and grilled.

Similar Species

A row of enlarged, sharp scutes along the lateral line instantly separates it from mackerel and sardines; white trevally (Pseudocaranx dentex) lacks the scute row.
