About this species

A dark, spiny rockfish that is one of Korea's most important coastal and aquaculture species, known locally as ureok. It holds tight to reefs, harbor walls and shipwrecks, feeding on fish and crustaceans. Bottom bait rigs and jigs fished close to structure produce steadily.

Similar Species

Distinguished from the black rockfish (Sebastes melanops) by its darker and more uniformly black-brown coloration and blunter head; range also separates it from most similar Sebastes species.
