About this species

A cold-water salmonid of northeast Asian mountain streams, in Korea an endangered species at the southern edge of its range. It needs clear, chilly headwaters and preys on insects and small fish. Protected in Korea, it should be released unharmed wherever encountered.

In countries where fishing is permitted, small dry flies, nymphs, and tiny spinners on light tackle in cold headwater streams; protected and must be released in Korea.

Edibility & Taste

Flesh is edible and prized where legally caught; as a protected species in Korea it must be released immediately if accidentally hooked.

Similar Species

Distinguished from the Siberian lenok (Brachymystax tumensis) by its more rounded snout and smaller spots; resembles yamame and iwana but has a subterminal, rounder mouth.
