Zacco platypus
A small, colorful minnow that swarms in clear Korean streams, the males flushing with vivid breeding colors in summer. It feeds on drifting insects and algae in riffles and runs. Tiny hooks with paste bait or small flies make it a fun, fast target for beginners and fly fishers.
0 – 3 m
Tiny dough pellets or bread paste on micro hooks under a minimal float with rice bran groundbait; small dry flies and soft hackles work beautifully on a light fly rod.
Edible but rarely targeted for the table; summer males in breeding color are sometimes skewered and grilled whole.
Striped shiner (Zacco temminckii, 갈겨니) has a similar body shape but the male's breeding colors are duller; pale chub males develop spectacular orange-red and blue breeding dress in summer.
